TOMA FOTOS / TAKE PICTURES

ESPAÑOL
Toma fotos.

ENGLISH
Take pictures. Of your friends, of the places you visit, of the people you meet in the way, of your family, of the things you love... of whatever you want. Even if it embarrases you, even if it's not "the right time", even if you "don't have the best camera" or are "a photographer". It is not a contest. They are captured memories that make you relive what is in there. Take pictures because those moments are that, moments, that will not happen again, that die in the next instant. People and places go or change and it will never be the same. You leave them or they leave you. I know what I'm saying... take pictures.

Escrita, producida y dirigida por Eileen Akel / Written, Produced and Directed by Eileen Akel

ENGLISH

Everytime I watch the Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys, SAG Awards or any other award show, I start dreaming (like JD from Scrubs) that I win several awards. For some reason, besides from "Actress in a leading role", It has always caught my attention the one from "Original Screenplay". I have this "fantasy" (or why not say it, GOAL) that some day I will write such a good screenplay that It'll turn into a movie and then I'll win the OScar for "Original Screenplay" and also "Foreign Language Movie"...!

Anyway, I started writing this because I realized how, sometimes, people (and yes, I say people because I don't wanna feel alone here...) create a thousand movies in our heads.

Generally (and this is important, I say GENERALLY, not ALWAYS or ONLY), women tend to make all this "movies" in our heads when we like someone, or we're dating or going out with someone we like, etc.

If a guy that you like says "Hi" the "Original Screenplay" begins. From the first "Hi", we start analyzing, and then we tell our friends "Guess what, he looked at me and said "hi..."

The funniest part is when you have a "relationship" with this person (obviously he/she doesn't know about it...) and you make the mega film, Best Drama Oscar winner, for any little thing he/she does. It goes like this:

"He didn't say "hi"?!?!... well, now I'm gonna make him jelous..." and after that comes a "I KNEW IT! he's looking at me!, he's dying of jelousy because I'm slow dancing with my (GAY) friend,... he even choked!... I'm sure he'll come to me really soon"...

All of this translates that the poor guy simply had to sneeze and he just happened to turn his head on your direction. PERIOD.

Sometimes I laugh about my own stories that I make in my head. If it's not a movie it's a miniseries or a soap opera, or at least a short film... but the truth is that after, I land in the ground and think "Ok Eileen, show's over... cold head now".

Another case is when you friend comes and tells you his/her story (that is also like a movie script) and asks for your comments (like a movie critic for their "very original" screenplay), hoping that at least you say "Oh sure, you're right".

The truth is that many time we act upon what others are doing. We're looking at what the other is doing so we can create a reaction on him/her. We make ideas that many times are just that: IDEAS. I'm not gonna lie and say it's not fun sometimes to have the thrill of "KNOWING WHAT THE OTHER IS THINKING" but the truth is that generally those are just coincidences (when he looks at you, if he smiles at you, ...) and it's not necessary to make the mega HBO original production directed and produced by Steven Spielberg.

With this I'm not saying that sometimes what you "thought" turns to "BE". It's true. This things happen. Sometimes HE IS LOOKING AT YOU, HE IS DYING OF JELOUSY, AND HE IS CHOKING WHEN HE SEES YOU DANCING WITH SOMEONE ELSE.

I think I just felt the need to write about how creative we can be when it comes to create characters, situations and even unexpected endings to the movies in our heads. I also have to admit that many of these films have made my day!. And last, at the end of the day, I have to be myself, act upon what I feel or think of myself and not get driven so much by the movies in my head... no matter how good they are!

"¡MARINO TE BESO"! / "I'LL KISS YOU, SAILOR!"

ENGLISH

Last week something interesting happened in the not so interesting Guayaquil: The 11 ships from "Velas Sudamericanas 2010" (South American Sails) from different countries visited us and stayed here for a few days as a part of the "Regata Bicentenario 2010" (sorry I'm to tired to translate that!)

For a young and single girl like me, the interesting part in all of these were THE SAILORS from: Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Spain, Chile, Netherlands, Mexico, Uruguay and ... Portugal!!

It was monday, may 10th, and I was "fine and dandy" at my job. Then I asked until when were they staying, which the answer was: "THEY'RE LEAVING TOMMORROW". I was feeling ansiuos and I thought "NOW OR NEVER... SAILORS, HERE I COME"!. I entered in my facebook account and asked in my status if there was anyone interested in going to see them. The truth is that I was dying to see the portuguese sailors, but since they were all "in the same port" I thought "I'll kill 10 birds with one bullet"... WRONG!. A friend of mine who lives in the south part of the city wrote me and said that the Portuguese Ship was IN THE SOUTH!. I live and work in the north and I don't have a car of my own (or have a "dog barking behind me" who can take me there!)so I got more ansious. I decided to think smart: WHO IS REALLY INTEREDTED IN GOING THERE?
(We call "dog" a guy that really likes you and follows you everywhere).

I remembered my first option; the friend that is always willing to go in new plans: "LA OCHITA"!! (the friend that I talked about in my first post). SURPRISE: Daniela HAD TO go to take pictures to two ships: Colombia and... PORTUGAL!!!. I, very excited, said "well, let's go", but she said "I don't wanna go alone to the south"... New "obstacle"... But then I checked my facebook and Jennifer, my friend Chary's sister, the one that lives in Australia) replied at my post and said she wanted to go with me, and after making the arrangements, the 3 of us decided to go together. After that, Daniel, a friend who is portuguese descendant that lives in the south, appeared and said that he could go with me if I wanted. Now we were 4!.

We arrived to the south... I could not belive it: The Portugal Bounty (or ship, I don't know If I'm saying that right...!) in front of me. I know, I know... "sailors are often the uggliest and most "poor and loosery" guys from each countries"... I'll just say that if the "worst looking and most poor and loosery guys" are like that, then I'll go and live there! I went in the ship and I felt like a girl in Disneyland: A parade of spectacular sailors. Even the ugly guys had "their thing"!.

I remembered that my friend Gaby told me that once at the beach, she saw this clown making a street show and when he saw a sailor passing by, he shouted "SAILOR, I'LL KISS YOU!". Since then, we've always make jokes about that, but this time I was seriously thinking "OH MEU DEUS", SAILORS, I'LL KISS YOU!!

After hours of drewling, we had to go. Eventhoug I didn't saw the other sailors from other countries, I was fascinated with the ones I really wanted to see. The little adventure from monday was definitely worth it.

I'll leave ypu with some pictures and maybe in other post I'll show you a video I made... (It's another story).

ENGLISH

First of all... hi again!! I've been lost because I fell (long story) and I fractured one of my fingers and It hurt to type... but I'm better now.

Now I'll tell you my new adventure...

On friday I got together with some friends of my first year of highschool. First they came to my house and then we decided to look for something interesting to do so we went out.

We were going to a bar when we, by chance, went to one of our friends little sister's party. She told us to come inside and to have a drink because her sister (Fiorella) was there too so we could say hi, etc. When we came in we ran into a lot of "kids" about 17-18 years-old and well, that made us laugh a little because we started to remember the highschool years. Then a few boys came to us and asked us to dance. We told them that we didn't want to and we laughed because of their insistence until they asked us "How old are you?". I think It was a bad question...

They started "cheking us out" from head to toes and one of them dediced to answer pointing at us one by one: "28, 29, 30, 30..." ...!!! In that moment I think the smile on our faces got erased... 30!!! (YES, I was one of the 30's!!). After hearing that I wanted to ran away from there!! I mean, I'm 25, I'm in the middle of my 20's and I have no rush getting into my 30's! When we got out of there, we wento to several places but it seemed like the entire city was INFESTED with kids, because when we went inside the bar, there were just 18-20 year-old people TOPS!

Then we went to another place and things got worse... JUST OLD PEOPLE! The worst part was that the old men with faces like hungry wolves looked at us as if we where the only sheep in the place. Terrible; we had to ran away from there, too. After spinning around the entire city we realized that the night was a failure and we went to sleep.

To think that we went out feeling like 15 year-old girls and we came back with our self-esteem in our hands being dragged like a "carry-on" bag...!

I think the lesson here is that if you get into kids things you are the experienced old woman and they'll see you like a "teacher of life" and if you get in places where you find old people you'll be the "risky and full of life school girl" willing to experience anything, so you better take a good look before getting into a place. Sometimes it's better to hang out with your girls and enjoy a good and long night of gossip and wine. Oh, and don't go out on a friday night in Guayaquil 'cause it sucks!!

See you soon!

¡MAMI, PONY! / MOMMY, PONY!

APESTABA A ELEFANTE y nadie me quería cerca! jajajaja

=)

ENGLISH

I finnally got the picture and now I'm gonna tell you this story. I must say that I'm a little embarrassed to tell ypou this, but I can't help to laugh everytime I see this picture!

Here it is, the "famous" story of "MOMMY, PONY!"

When I was a little girl, my parents took me to the circus; I'll never forget what happened that day. We were watching all the presentations: Lions, clowns, acrobats, etc. Suddenly in all the excitement, a clown came to me and grabbed my arm. My parents and sisters were laughing and I didn't understood anything... My mom just said "Go with the clown"... so I went. I saw more people and I heard the clown saying "TAKE HER UP"!

When I realized it, I was gettin on top of AN ELEPHANT! 2 girls and 1 boy where in front of me and I was frightened! I grabbed like a monkey to the boy's shirt (I even think I ruined it because I streched it so much!) and we where all screaming with terrifying faces while the rest of the circus was laughing and thinking "man, those kids are having fun"!

After they took me down from the elephant I went to sit with my family. I STINKED LIKE ELEPHANT and no one wanted me close! hahahaha

When we were leaving, I saw 2 clowns with a pony and a line of kids waiting to take a picture with it. I looked at my mom and said "Mommy, a pony!"... she looked at me and said "yeah, cute right?" and I said "yeah, I wanna picture on top of it"...

Since I grew up watching "My little Pony", to me it was a very especial moment: HAVING A PICTURE WITH A PONY!

In that time of my childhood, it could be said that I was VERY WELL FED and to tell you the thruth the pony was tiny. The kids that were in the line were at least 3 years younger than me and well, "with less meat in their bones"! Mi mom looked at me with pitty; she didn't knew how to tell me "you're too BIG for the pony" and since I insisted so much, she got in the line.

When my turn came up, the clowns looked at me and their smiles dissapeared from their faces! they just looked at the pony with pitty and said "well, bring the little girl!" and made me stand up next to the pony. I wanted the picture sitting on top of it so I said "NO! I WANT TO BE SITTING ON TOP OF THE PONY"! My mom, the clowns and even the pony looked at me like saying "don't do it"!!

I leave you the picture of that moment... I just want you to look at THE PONY'S EYE!! that says it all!!

=)

¡¡Cuando el karaoke sale mal!! / When karaoke goes wrong!!

¡Disfrutenlo!.. ¡o no!

xoxo

ENGLISH

I think most of us have an inner "star" (or at least a frustrated one) inside. Actor, singer, etc. When you go to a karaoke bar, you hear everything: the undicovered star, the one that sings well and the one that sings like shit!

Anyway, we all like to sing! (well, most of us).

I was in Salinas (a beach near Guayaquil)with some friends and we went to the Yacht Club's karaoke bar. I think I've never felt so much inside a scene of "My best friend's wedding" than that night.

The terror of karaoke is to run into a Cameron Díaz. I think we all remember the scene where she sings and someone shouts "YOU SUCK!".

I leave you a video of an ECUADORIAN CAMERON DÍAZ! I couln't have a better idea than to film her and make little jokes while she, very excited and inside the character, sings with her soul!. But first, a look at the video of Cameron Diaz singing!!

Enjoy it!... or not!

METAS 2010: ¡AUSTRALIA Y PORTUGAL! / 2010 GOALS: AUSTRALIA AND PORTUGAL!

No entendía nada! Solo me paré y ella me paso mi cartera y dijo "SI NO HAY CUADRA PARA CORRER NI MALETA PARA LLEVAR...

;)

ENGLISH

When 2010 started, like every year, I defined goals. The difference is that this year I focused on really making them happen. My biggest goals are to go to Australia and Portugal.

Why Australia and Portugal? Easy. My friends!

Caridad or “Chary” as I call her, is one of my best friends in the whole World!! We’ve known each other since we were 13 years old (going on 14) and since then we’ve been inseparable. She went to live to Australia last year, and even though she came to visit, she’s not coming back soon and I’M DYING TO SEE HER! She went there to do a master degree and couldn’t pick a better place (or more expensive one…!!)to do it. She is a surfer and always wanted to live in front of the beach. Now she lives in Gold Coast, A PARADISE, and I intend to go visit her. We’ve been together through everything. When I lived in Argentina, she went there to visit me for a month and now it’s my turn to do it!

José Antonio or “Jose” is a very special friend. We met through common friends and even though he was in Portugal and I was in Argentina, we “clicked” and our friendship began. Then, we met in Argentina and 2 times here in Ecuador and although we haven’t seen each other too many times, we’re always in touch. I’ve spend year after year saying “I’ll visit you someday”, so NOW IT’S TIME! He lives in a European paradise: Funchal, Madeira.

I want to take advantage of 2010 to travel for very valid reasons: I’m young, I’m single, don’t have any children,… I have the world ahead of me! So before waking up one day and say “What if…” I decided to MAKE IT HAPPEN!

I don’t know how much do you relieve in New Year’s superstitions, but this year I decided to take the risk and experiment with something. I was in Ayangue (a beach in Ecuador near Guayaquil) with Chary, her family and my parents when everything started. We ate the 12 grapes and after that I heard my mom screaming “Eileen, come here!” I didn’t understand anything! I just got up and she handed me my purse and said: “IF THERE’S NO BLOCK TO RUN OR A BAG TO CARRY… RUN AROUND THE POOL WITH YOUR PURSE!!!” I’m talking of course about the tradition of running around a block with a bag to attract traveling.

I DIDN’T THOUGHT ABOUT IT: I GRABBED MY PURSE AND RAN AWAY!! Chary and my mom where laughing to death and people were staring at me as If I was a crazy woman! They said “You’re going to Australia, you’re going!” and I just ran that pool as if my life depended on it!

That store doesn’t end here, but I wanted to give you a little preview so it didn’t get “too heavy”… (I know, I write a lot but THERE TOO MUCH TO SAY…)

I leave you the video of Ayangue so you laugh a little bit! I am such a LOSER but I don’t care! When I’m in Madeira and Australia I will laugh more!

http://www.misapellidos.com/ver_datos.phtml?cod=4562

YO: "EILEEN AKEL"
TAXI: "DE QUIEN!?!?!?!?!?!?!?"
YO: "EILEEN AKEL!!!!!!!!!!!"
TAXI: "QUE, SEÑORITA NO LE ESCUCHO, ALI Q?"
YO: "¡¡¡¡¡¡EILEEEEEEEEN AAAAAAAAAKEEL!!!!!"

A MI NOMBRE!! GRAVE ERROR!...

Yo me reí y pense, "bueno, listo.

!!.. y yo dije "A NOMBRE DE EILEEN AKEL". Me acerque y decia: "RESERVADO. EIMEEN EIKEL"

"EIMEEN EIKEL"!!!!

"AILIN Á-KEL" jaja no AQUEL! no RAQUEL!.. AKEL!

Hazte seguidor HIJUE...!

ENGLISH

Being named EILEEN is not an easy thing in Ecuador. Not only because it’s written “funny” but because it’s pronounced differently than latins are used to speak.

There’s a song by the group The Ting Tings that makes me think a lot about my situation: “That’s not my name”. I think it should be a part of the soundtrack of my life!.

My name has history. My mom was pregnant with me and without knowing my sex she dreamed about my name. She woke up and wrote it in a piece of paper. Months later.. BAM! “IT’S ANOTHER GIRL MR. AND MRS. AKEL!!”

I’m going to make a parenthesis and show you something about my name:

Eileen

Definition of Eileen
Irish variant from Helen*.
BEautiful as the sun.
Date:
August 18th (Santa Elena).

Another definition of Eileen
The meaning of Hielen is also Moonlight.

Another definition of Eileen
Hielen in the scotish dialecyt jeans “Island”

Another definition of Eileen
From Greek origins and jeans the one that shines.

http://www.misapellidos.com/ver_datos.phtml?cod=4562 (IT’S IN SPANISH)

That’s right guys, FROM IRISH TONGUE!, there’s the “problem”...

Don’t get me wrong, I love my name, but it could also be said that it has being my “cross” for 25 years of my life (or at least since I was old enough to understand that people was calling me ANYTHING but Eileen!).

It all began in school when teachers passed the attendance. Those where the mos stressing minutes of my days: "AQUEL, ... AQUEL... EI... ELI.. E..." ... !!! and I yelled from the back of the classroom... "¡ÁKEL... EILEEN.. EILEEN AKEL!" and they said "Oh yeah, AQUEL EILEN"!

Years went by and I got used to hear everything! I left my “bitterness” aside and started to see it as a creativity contest. I heard THINGS like: ELIN, ELIEN, ALIEN, ALI, ARLIN, ALISSON, ELEN, HELEN, PIOLÍN (Spanish name for TWEETY), VIOLÍN (VIOLIN),... and that was just my name. When they combined it with my last name, things got more interesting: "ELIEL AQUEN, AYQUE, AQUEL (that’s the most common!), BAQUE, JERKEL, EKEL,... I could spend the entire night and never finish!

One of the funniest stories was when I called a cab to pick me up a few years ago. Lets say that when I finished school, it was the taxi phone operators that became my new “cross”. Here’s I detail a little script of how the thing was…

TAXI: "HI, FASTLINE, GOOD AFTERNOON, HOW CAN I HELP YOU?"
ME: "GOOD AFTERNOON MISS, I WOULD LIKE TO ORDER A CAB TO PICK ME UP IN “LA KENNEDY”"
TAXI: "SURE, WHO’S NAME SHOULD I SEND IT FOR?"...

That was the phrase that I was most afraid of WHO’S NAME SHOULD I SEND IT FOR?"...

ME: "EILEEN AKEL, PLEASE"
TAXI: (Long pause and doubtful voice), "...WHO?!?!"
ME: "EILEEN AKEL"
TAXI: "WHO?!?!?!?!?!?!?"
ME: "EILEEN AKEL!!!!!!!!!!!"
TAXI: "WHAT, MISS I CAN’T HEAR YOU, ALI WHAT?"
ME: "¡¡¡¡¡¡EILEEEEEEEEN AAAAAAAAAKEEL!!!!!"
TAXI: "HMM, YEAH, SURE, ... I’LL SEND YOU A TEXT MESSAGE TO YOUR CELLPHONE. THANKS FOR CALLING FASTLINE".
END OF CALL.

Well, to me the worst part was over. I was with my friend Gisella waiting for them to pick us up, when we see a car arriving. The chofer stopped and stared at us. We thought “Is that the taxi?” and I said to Gisella, “I don’t know, let’s just wait for him tos ay something to us”.

The man looked everywhere and since he saw that we where the onlyones there he pulled down the window and said: "GOOD AFTERNOON, MISS JACKELINE BAQUE"!!!!!

My friend Gisella almost choke! She couldn’t stop laughing and neither did I! The man looked at us like we where crazy and I was saying “I (hahahahaha) I AM (hahahahaha) JACKELINE!! JACKELINE BAQUEEEEEEE AAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAA” and the mas all scared: “Mmmm, well miss JACKELINE, get in please”… We where laughing the entire time and the driver I think thought we where carazy. But well, he made our day happy! 

The most recent of all was with a group of friends. We decided to go to a bar (BIERJAUS… pronounced BEER HOUSE) to have a few beers and catch up. Sice that place gets crowded, we thought it would be better to book a table. I asked La 8ita to call and get a table on my name… ON MY NAME!! HUGE MISTAKE!...

Alter a while, Daniela called me and said “Eileen, how stressful, the guy that booked the table was so show, but I gave him your name. I had to SPELLED it like this: E for Ecuador, I for Iguana, L of Loro (Parrot)… etc., etc., … until he got it!. I laughed and thought “Well, all set. It’s done”.

At night we got to the bara nd I told them “Good night, I have a table booked under my name”. The waiter said “Sure, WHAT’S THE NAME”…! and I said “EILEEN AKEL”. You should have seen his “HELP” face, poor guy... priceless!. He started to look around and I saw there was a table with SOMETHING FUNNY WRITTEN IN IT. I got closer and it said “RESERVED. EIMEEN EIKEL”

"EIMEEN EIKEL"!!!!

I sarted laughing my ass out and said “Yeah, yeah… I’m EIMEEN. Thanks”.

Summing it up, EIleen is not a name that any women, specially latin, can have. Eileen is a name for strong women that can have the HOLLY PATIENCE of listening their name turned into shit and think “Wow, there’s a lot of creativity (or stupidity) in the world”.

To all tose EILEEN’S out there I have something to tell you: IDOLS! MY RESPECTS TO YOU!

And for tose who still have a doubt: It’s pronounced AILIN! (In Spanish of course) “AILEN Á-KEL” (like AH – KEL) haha not AQUEL,! Not RAQUEL!.. AKEL!

I dedicate this entry to my friend FEDE!! who ask for it on facebook! hahaha Fede you are the best! Become a follower SON OF A B...!

¿Cómo empiezas a escribir un blog? / How do you start to write a blog?

Let the games begin!

Today has been a "big day".. or an "unusual" day for me... Sice a long time ago
I've been meaning o open a blog, but I hadn't had the strength to do it. I mean... How do you start to write a blog?... well, today I simply decided that no matter what I write o who may read it (or not), I wanted to write.

I'm a 25 year-old ecuadorian, my zodiac sign is gemini, I have 4 sisters (I'm the little one!!) and I live with my parents... I KNOW!.. 25 years and living with my parents!. In Ecuador that's not so rare, so I hope you don't freak out hahaha. I Study and work in the advertising field, but I've always wanted to be an actress, travel the world and enjoy the most out of this life.

I'm not overthinking what I'm writing. The words come out of my head and that what I've put so far. I hope to be more interesting in the future, but for now I just wanna say I have a pretty good life, but I think It's time to make it exceptional.

Today, not only did I "devirginate" from the blog, I also opened a Twitter account...! After thinking it through and say "I DON'T GET WHY PEOPLE LOVE TWITTER SO MUCH", I decided to figure it out by myself. I hope I do ok.

I wanna dedicate this entry from my blog, my first entry, to some very special friends. The first one is Eri and she was the one that told me right this instant "Y... abrí una cuenta de blog" (SO.. open a blog account).. she's from Argentina and was like a sister to me when I lived there during my freshman year in university. Also, to my friend Daniela (8ita or Ochita), because she told me the same some time ago.. Girls, you made me brave!

Let the games begin!
